10 preconceptions about hair straightening

Straighteners ruin the hair, lissage is reserved for curly hair… Don’t let preconceived ideas rule your lengths anymore! Find out which technique is right for you by carefully analyzing these prejudices that mislead you.

The straightener burns the hair

False… unless you use it incorrectly. Running the heating plates over the same lock of hair repeatedly or lissage every day will actually damage the hair fiber by dehydrating it. Use the hair-smoothing iron respecting the hair: always apply a thermo-active treatment beforehand that acts as a shield protecting the lengths from heat. Also be careful to adjust the temperature according to the type of hair to avoid overheating (moderate on sensitized, fine or fragile hair and higher if it is thick).

I can use the straightener on damp hair

Yes and no… Some straighteners can now be used on damp hair but the heat of the straightener is more aggressive for the hair fiber if it is wet. It is therefore preferable to use it on dry hair, whatever the device used, to avoid fragile lengths.

I cannot use the straightener with extensions

On the contrary. It is better to use a straightener to smooth the extensions instead of a hair dryer and a brush that tend to pull these added strands.

Smoothing is temporary

More or less, but not always! It depends on the type of ironing. If the results obtained with the plate are passenger, with the chemical smoothing kits to be made at home you will have smooth lengths for several weeks. If you opt for professional salon lissage, your hair will stay smooth for even longer. With a Brazilian lissage, for example, the result on lengths lasts about 4 months, while the Japanese lissage is permanent because it changes the hair structure permanently. It is therefore necessary to wait for the hair to grow back in order to rediscover the initial nature of the lengths.

Professional straightening is like ironing.

Fake. Although the two methods have the same purpose (smoothing lengths), they do not use the same techniques. The lissage requires a combined intervention with the heat of the plate. Ironing, on the other hand, which is more aggressive for the hair, frees up chemical active ingredients.

Professional techniques are reserved for curly hair

It’s fake. Although they are ideal for taming curly and frizzy hair, they are also used on undefined waves. They also offer impeccable brushing to fluffy hair or even eliminate the frizzy effect of moisture-sensitive hair. In short, they ensure a perfect hairstyle on every occasion.

I can choose any professional straightening technique

It’s fake. The possible methods vary depending on the hair. If they are natural and healthy, you can choose the one you prefer based on the desired result. Japanese lissage, on the other hand, should be avoided on hair with highlights already sensitized by coloring. On damaged hair it is better to opt for a Brazilian lissage that cures the hair fiber thanks to keratin. To obtain a satisfactory result on frizzy or curly hair, opt for Japanese lissage instead.

With a long lasting straightening there is no need for care

This is true for Brazilian lissage whose effects fade gradually but not for a permanent lissage like the Japanese one. You’ll need to touch up your regrowth twice a year to keep your hair smooth from root to tip.

With professional smoothing there is no longer any need for a straightener.

Not necessarily. Not all professional lissage techniques are equivalent. If super smooth lengths are the result of Japanese lissage, they maintain their softness with Brazilian lissage. In fact, keratin relaxes the fiber but does not stiffen it. To make adjustments and have an impeccable lissage, the plate is still your precious ally.

If I straighten my hair in a lasting way I can no longer curl it.

Yes, I do! Even after a professional lissage nothing prevents you from curling lengths with the iron. You’ll find your hair smooth after shampooing, while curls sometimes hold less well. After a Japanese lissage, forget about services for semi-permanent curls because the fiber structure has already been modified.
